Reed House Garden, Subiaco

By paying close attention to the personalities, relationships and desires of the client family, banksia & lime with architect Beth George, has created a garden that is much loved and well-used. Enjoyed from inside the house as well as through daily activities within the garden, it provides the connection with nature the clients desired for their children.

Taking the nostalgic spatial memories of the clients and the memories they want to instil in their four daughters as a starting point, banksia & lime designed a series of gardens connected by colour and texture for this award-winning house and garden. Merging inside and outside living with a different garden for every room of the house, each with its own moods and rhythms. The result is a biodiverse, bold and experimental landscape deeply connected to daily life.

The mother has told us that sometimes, when it’s quiet, she sits in a specific spot in the house, and looks across the central planted courtyard through to the backyard. That’s her favourite thing to do, to look at that layered view. To us, that’s golden, that’s what we need a landscape to do; provide that recharge moment every day for our clients.
